5 Surprising Spring Trends for 2014

Written by Fiona Queens. Posted in Fashion

This year New York Fashion Week has brought us some surprising spring trends for the following year. Designers showed off some new styles for the upcoming season, as well as some recycled trends. Check out this list of the most surprising spring trends for 2014:

1. Black and White Flowers

Although floral spring trends are not original or surprising, designers manage to give it a unique spin every season. This year, graphic black and white floral patterns caught our attention. Famous designers such as Oscar de la Renta, Peter Som and Ralph Lauren have chosen the motif for their collection. Prabal Gurung’s created a futuristic look for his models with black and white flower patterns and clear fabrics painted with flowers.

2. Laser tag

The 2014 spring trends take surprising turn with the laser tag look. Designers used sheer materials, mesh fabrics, and frosty latex layers. At the end of the spectrum, they embellished outfits with laser cut details. Alexander Wang lasered his name on dresses, skirts, gloves and jackets while Tory Burch placed layered lattice-cut leathers on top of spring knits. Threeasfour created a complex laser cut geometrical shape for a 3D effect.

3. Liquid metallic

The liquid metallic look is more silky and sophisticated than edgy and futuristic for the 2014 spring trends. Altuzarra used silver lame and gold skirts while Tory Burch chose a shiny lace print skirt. Marc by Marc Jacobs created an interesting psychedelic oil-slick effect with a shiny metallic coat.

4. Crop Tops

Yes, the 90s is officially back and crop tops are no longer inappropriate. According to designers, it’s time to show your mid-section and wear Proenza Schouler’s metallic tops. This season it would be easier to list the designers who didn’t crop a top. Tommy Hilfiger, Tibi, Vera Wang, Rodarte and many others chose crop tops for their spring trends. Diane von Furstenberg was all about relaxation while Michael Kors gave some glamour with ultra-feminine silhouettes and dreamy prints.

5. The 90s Trend

The 90s is back for the 2014 spring trends after 20 years. Some designers chose bold colors and lingerie looks while some adopted minimal shapes. Alexander Wang presented a model wearing a crop top with slouchy trousers and Rag & Bone embraced a mix of prints and overalls. Marcus Wainwright and David Neville used lights colors for a 90s look and chunky platform sandals. BCBG Max Azria’s deconstructed look was inspired by modern art and nature, although his minimal color and clean lines remind of the 90s.
